THE ORIGINAL ART \u0026amp; ITS STORY Byeon Sang-byeok, an eighteenth-century Joseon court painter, created Sparrows and Cats (Myojakdo). Known for his portraits and especially his cats and chickens, he earned a nickname associated with painting cats. The National Museum of Korea describes the original’s lifelike pair of cats and urgently chirping sparrows, painted with delicate strokes against a boldly brushed old tree sprouting fresh leaves. This version adapts those animals and a shorter section of tree for a shirt.
