Durer’s armored rhinoceros in black linework, with the original German text, 1515 lettering, border and artist monogram preserved. THE ORIGINAL ART & ITS STORY Albrecht Durer (1471–1528) made The Rhinoceros in 1515 as a woodcut with letterpress text. He never saw the living animal himself: news of a rhinoceros brought from India to the Portuguese king inspired his astonishing image of plated armor, scales and an extra horn. Despite its imaginative anatomy, the image shaped European ideas of the rhinoceros for centuries. This version extracts the original ink linework and text; the spaces between the inked lines show the shirt color. SHIRT OPTIONS & FIT
