An expressive Korean dragon with curling blue-green scales, ivory horns and a red nose, adapted from a late-Joseon painting. THE ORIGINAL ART & ITS STORY An unidentified Korean artist created Dragon and Carp in the late nineteenth century, during the Joseon dynasty. The Metropolitan Museum of Art connects its dragon and carp to the legend of determined carp swimming upstream and leaping to become dragons—an image of perseverance and the challenge of passing civil-service examinations.
